Here solid kayaks will be referred to as hard kayaks. A hard kayak is suitable for people who live near the water or have the opportunity, for example, to transport them on the roof of the car. The hard kayak is stable and can be made of either plastic or fiberglass. This has a bearing on strength, durability and weight. Plastic is very durable, but weighs a little more than fiberglass. Fiberglass is an expensive but lightweight material. There are different types of kayaks available.
The sea kayak is long, wide and stable. It easily handles small waves and chop. It is not so fast, but very stable. The racing kayak is made of fiberglass and very long and narrow. It sails only on flat water. A touring kayak is very pointed and wide in the middle. It is made for longer trips where both pace and stability are important.
